- "Music Around the World," Silver Burdett 1956, has a 206pp large spiral-bound companion book, "Teachers Book Six."
Example: Nelly Bly- Extended sheet music with chords. An analysis of the form of the song; the melodic ideas (AABB), melody based on the interval of a third, discussion of Foster, etc.
Orientation: Pattern of the major scale, Chording Instruments (autoharp, guitar), Melody Instruments (flute, etc.).
There is a companion teacher's book for each of the six pupils books.
The Silver Burdett Music For Living Series printings were not all done under their Company name. In California, it became the "California State Series, published by California State Department of Education."
Printed by California State Printing Office, Sacramento, CA, three printings by 1962.
This means a difference in booksellers listings, if you search by publisher.

In the 1970s-1980s, Silver Burdett put out a new series called Silver Burdett Music. Volumes 1-6 (Grades 1-6) list the first author either as Elizabeth Crook or Bennett Reimer. Some are labeled Centennial Edition. Again, there are Teachers Editions, which include more information than the student-use volumes, and are mostly hard cover. Most copies are paperback.
Are these revisions, with partly different songs and arrangement of content from the editions of the 1950s, etc.?
Indexing all of the volumes through the years would be daunting. What was the content of the books in 1890; 1900; 1910; 1930; 1960; etc.? With analysis and comment. this would easily be a topic for a Master's thesis.
Series objectives are stated in terms of "seven behaviors": Perceiving; Reacting; Producing, Conceptualizing; Analyzing, Evaluating; Valuing (Joe, keep these in mind as you study the songs- Sister Brunhilda with ruler in hand, your old music Teach).
- Q, my music teacher was Sister John Bosco, and I was in love with her. She said that the other alto and I were "really sharp" - and we took that as a compliment.

Quite a difference between the earlier Fourth Book, "The Music Hour," and the later Fourth Book, "Near and Far," both Silver Burdett books. Different philosophies on the part of the compilers, and changing times.
"The Music Hour, Fourth Book," embossed in black on the green cloth hardcover and spine, and printed on the title page. No other names. "Dedicated to Edward MacDowell" also on cover and title page. Copyright 1929, 1937, Silver Burdett Co. NY, Boston, Chicago, SF. Authors McConathy, Miessner, Birge and Bray. A little smaller in size than the Music For Living Series. Cover picture of a fiddler and dancing couple, 19th c. dress.

Q - Regarding the Music Hour: I picked up two books in the series at the library book sale yesterday. They are California reprints of the Silver Burdett series of the 1930's, with fancy embossed art deco covers. I can't tell what grade level they are. One is titled Music Highways and Byways (copyright 1936 - 1942 printing) and the other Music
of Many Lands and Peoples (copyright 1932 - 1933 printing. Authors are McConathy, Beattie, and Morgan. Is your Music Hour book embossed like that? Does it have an individual title? Where did you see that it was a 4th grade book?

Music Hour 3rd book has a boy playing clarinet on cover.
The Music Hour series by McConathy was preceded by the 'Progressive Music Series" by Parker, Horatio (senior author), McConathy, Birge and Miessner, 1915-1920.
'New Music Horizons' series was the name in the 1940s, McConathy sr. author.

Joe, I have been picking up these books and those in the School Songbook Permathread in Used Book Stores all over the country for nearly sixty years. Others have come down to me from my Presbyterian minister grandfather, my school teacher mother and mymusic teacher mother-in-law. They all remain in my library and are accessible to me most of the time though we are now living in two places 600 miles apart. So far haven't been more than thirty days away from them at a time. Until you started these threads I had no idea how many I had nor realized that it was only an infinitesmal fraction of those published. I hope they can be a useful resource but to date I have had no inquiries. - Charles

Hi, emjay. Do you have the Music Hour, Two-Book Course, Upper Grades?
From: GUEST,JTyre

Does anyone know of a way to contact someone at today's Silver-Burdett music education division? I'm interested in finding out about "mounts" that Horatio Parker used for grading submissions to the "Progressive Series." These include children's songs by well-known composers of the day (@1913) that Parker commissioned. Apparently Silver Burdett also kept copies of the correspondence between composers and Parker regarding the project. In the 1980s the music ed. consultant for the company was one Polly Carder. I'd like to reach someone there about these old materials. Any information would be much appreciated.

I forgot to ask also if anyone who possesses the "Progressive Series" knows of a volume containing the piece "The Streamlet's Slumber Song," by Delius. Delius supposedly composed two songs for the collection -- "Streamlet" and "Little Birdie," the latter which appears in Book 2. If anyone knows about "Streamlet" please let me know and thanks much.

Q,
I only have one other Silver Burdett book, and haven't been able to locate it. One was my aunt's who taught school in Wisconsin from late 30s to early 40s. I don't think it was the one you asked about but I am still looking.

Guest Jess Tyre- Silver Burdett "Making Music" is now part of Pearson-Scott Foresman. They may have the old records of Silver Burdett. www.sbgmusic.com is the website- you might find some way of contacting them for information. The current site has a list of composers in their current books- Delius not mentioned.
Both of these children's songs are on a cd of Delius' part-songs- "Frederick Delius: Complete Part-Songs," tracks 14-15 -
Available from Amazon but limited quantities!
Books of the Progressive Series occasionally come up in dealers' lists.
emjay, I have a copy but didn't want to cross-post.

Thanks Q. I think one of the Delius songs ("Birdie") was to have appeared in Bk. 2, but I've found nothing on the "Streamlet" tune. One or both of these may have been dropped, as you say. Getting a look at those Silver-Burdett archives could be a way of finding out more, but no response from them yet. Thanks again for looking.

I am so impressed with all your work ... I am looking for the accompaniment to a song... supposedly from a grade 5 silver burdett book..the song is titled "Festival of Lights" - words and music by David Eddleman. I discovered he was an editor ..in the 70's? and a composer of some acclaim through the 1990's. Any suggestions? Cmdviola@aol.com

So far, no luck, Cathy. There were two Silver Burdett series in the 1970's, Making Music Your Own and Silver Burdett Music. The grade levels aren't marked on all the books. I have five volumes from each series, checked through all, and haven't found the song. I'll keep looking.
Is it a Hanukkah song?

Try Clicking here for works by Eddleman. Otherwise, Click here and search for Eddleman. He was a music editor with Silver Burdett-Ginn from 1972 to 1996. Many of his pieces appear in Silver Burdett Music, but nothing titled "Festival of Lights." If somebody could check the 1985 Silver Burdett Music, Centennial Edition, that might help us.
I was able to confirm that Eddleman wrote a holiday choral piece called "Festival of Lights." It is available at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com.

Some of us may have even more Silver Burdett books we haven't indexed yet, particularly in the Making Music Your Own and New Music Horizons series. Generally, the person who posted the index is the owner of that particular book.

Teachers' editions of books 4-6 of "Music for Living" are hard to find, esp. book 6 (Around the World) which was spirally bound and often torn apart. Binding of 4-5 teachers' ed. not known.
All Teachers' editions of "Making Music Your Own" were spirally bound.

Some fascinating mysteries in these lists.
Would it be possible for someone who has the songbooks to begin extracting the lyrics of gems not already in the DT? Even perhaps creating midis?

When Landeck took over chief editorship of the "Making Music Your Own" series from Youngberg and Luening (1970?), a few songs were dropped and others added. Overall, the Landeck editions seem to have a few more songs that the Youngberg editions.
In Book 5, Four were dropped:
Balm in Gilead (spiritual version)
The Captive Princess (Folksong from Chile)
(a very pretty song about a princess, a dragon, and a knight; the dragon frees the princess to the knight because he sang so well)
Handcart Song (Mormon)
Cradle Song (Wiegenlied)

Hi, Bob -
We posted these songbook indexes so people could request songs - and yes, we post a lot of them without being asked. We also try our best to post MIDIs. This songbook indexing project has been a lot of fun.
People request the songs here, and I move the requests and lyrics into new threads - we (usually) try to have a one-thread/one-song policy to avoid confusion (although it's wonderful to have multiple versions of a song in a single thread).

I am the pastor of Chatsworth and Forrest (Illinois) United Methodist Churches and also a musician. I have the SILVER BURDETT MUSIC FOR LIVING SERIES (copyright 1956), student editions for grades two through eight, but I would like to get the TEACHER'S EDITION for grades four through six ASAP. Please advise me how I can get these. I especially want grades five and six. I would also like to get the student book for grade one as well.

Hi, Rev Reynolds-
bookfinder.com (click) has lots of books from the Music for Living series, but not many teacher's guides. I believe the Teacher's Guides were spiral bound and softcover, which may be why not many have survived. This link will lead to Teacher's guide 1, 2, 5, and 6. If you search for the individual book title and add the word teacher's, you may come up with the missing Teacher's Guides - like this (click).

My somewhat puzzling music book possibly fits into the subject of this Permathread, but I don't think I've got the time at present to figure out how to extract appropriate bits to fit into the theme here.
NEW MUSIC HORIZONS, SIXTH BOOK - ILLUSTRATED BY JULES GOTLIEB
New Music Horizons is a series title used by Silver Burdett, but this one indicates no credit to S-B that I've been able to find.

There is NO INDEX OF SONGS with the only thing resembling a Table of Contents being a page giving:
NEW MUSIC HORIZONS Sixth Book
Being a Good Citizen
World Brotherhood
A Thing of Beauty Is a Joy Forever"
Songs Great Artists Sing
Composers of Our Times
Holidays and Festivals
Old World Songs and Ballads
"Jest and Youthful Jollity"
Work and Play in the U. S. A.
When the World Was Younger
How Music Grew
Our Own Tunes and Harmonies
Design in Music
Bowing and Blowing
Everyone Takes His Part
Through the Eyes and Ears of Science
There's Music on the Air
Note the absence of page numbering to indicate where to find any of the above, and they appear to be rather "intermixed" and "overlapping" in the book.
There is a "Classified Index" with page references for where to look for particular "morality/religious propaganda" but few of these reference anything by song titles.
Some songs carried under familiar titles are "fragments" without complete verses, and some have only fragments of a single verse. Some songs with familiar verses - sometimes even matching the scores customary with the song, are shown with song titles that are "unintelligible" and unrelated to the customary titles for the song/tune.
This is a book that I picked up at an antique shop, probably for reasons of "nostalgia" because the cover "looked familiar" - within the past ten years, although I can't say whether it's the same one that might have been in use when I was in 6th grade in Kansas. © - actually indicated just as a "publication date" - is 1946 which is "about the right time," but our "music teacher" also taught generic 5th grade so that's where we got our main "dose" of music, and it was less emphasized in 6th grade. I quite frankly don't recall whether we ever looked at the "book" in 6th grade so I may never have seen a "book 6," although we sang some ...
I'm scanning stuff, including books, because we've run out of shelf space, so all I've got is a pdf of the book. I scan for "publication quality" so my files are large. This one is about 221 MB (248 pages) and probably too big for easy emailing, but would be about 1/3 of a CD. I can print/extract individual pages to perhaps email individual songs, but since I can't figure out a way to tell anyone what's on the pages, that's of uncertain value.
About the only explanation I can come up with for the total disorganization of the book is ... "Hey - it's Kansas." If someone wants to try to figure that out I could snail mail a CD - maybe.

I taught classroom music in the 70's. I would love to have words and music to the song Unhappy Owl from the 6th Grade Music Around the World Music for Living series to sing to my grandchild. Is this possible?

I need to find a copy of the arrangement of Ah Lovely Meadow from the 1956 Music Around the World Silver Burdett book. Does someone out there have access to scanning this?
Thank you

Hi, Anna -
We have quite a discussion of "Ah, Lovely Meadows" in this thread (click). I think you'll enjoy it. If you need any additional help with the song, e-mail me at joe@mudcat.org

Anybody have New Music Horizons, Book 5? The Index says there's a song called "Joy" - I'm wondering if it is lyrics for "Ode to Joy."
I have those books somewhere here, but I can't find them.
